While debate rages over steroid use in pro sports, a former Carnegie Mellon athlete is doing something to keep high school athletes off performance-enhancing drugs.

Chad Zimmerman is the co-founder of STACK, a fitness magazine designed to give high school athletes safe and legal training alternatives. Zimmerman, a Tartan football lineman from 2000 to 2004, launched the magazine with former Harvard football player Nick Palazzo.

They say abuse of performance drugs is almost epidemic in high schools, citing a National Institute on Drug Abuse report that says that more than one million teenage athletes admit to having tried steroids.

STACK, which has signed some of America’s top performance enhancement coaches to help youngsters attain athletic success naturally, will go to high school athletic directors free of charge eight times yearly.

The inaugural issue features a cover story on the high school training program of Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James, techniques from Michael Jordan’s trainer to increase vertical jumps, speed increasing drills from the trainers of NFL stars Brian Urlacher and Michael Vick, plus tips on nutrition, strength training and increasing the odds of playing at the collegiate level.
