David Shiller (S'89) knows the eco-friendly market. He has years of experience-with the EPA's Energy Star lighting program, with private lighting manufacturer MaxLite, and even at his own green retail store. His work has been recognized by the National Association of Independent Lighting Distributors and by the "Lighting for Tomorrow" design competition. And throughout his award-winning career, Shiller has watched government regulations and private and commercial initiatives push businesses into forward-thinking green technology. Now, as consumers are looking for energy-efficient solutions, he can see that "the technology landscape for lighting is going to get a lot more complex."

He's ready to act on the change. Stepping in just as this new technological complexity appears on the horizon, he has taken the lessons learned from his wide-ranging career and applied them to the foundation of his business, Lighting Solution Development. The Pittsburgh-based company, started last fall, has partnered with several product lines to bring 160 fixture manufacturers energy-efficient lighting sources.

Serving as both a sales representative and consultant, Shiller uses his expertise to advocate for new technology and to work out the details of the supplier-client relationship. He expects his company to be an influential force in the lighting solutions of the future, helping to determine the technology chosen by commercial businesses and even the fixtures that line the shelves of Home Depot.
