His chalkboard is covered in graphs, lines, and dots. Inside the web of lines is a mystery. Gerard Cornuejols peers at these chalk lines every day. "I like to work the old-fashioned way," he laughs. For his fundamental and broad contributions to discrete optimization, the Tepper professor was recently awarded the INFORMS John von Neumann Theory Prize. It's the most prestigious honor in the field of operations research given to those who have made "fundamental, sustained contributions to theory in operations research and the management sciences." Past faculty winners include the late Herbert Simon (H'90) and Egon Balas.
