A pregnant woman sits in an emergency room, worried. She is experiencing cramping and awaits an ultrasound to see how her baby is doing. After the exam, the obstetrician on call reveals that all is fine, but acknowledges there can never be absolute assurances. The doctor is following the ethical guidelines of truthful disclosure to patients, which Frank Chervenak (HNZ'01) helped to develop. For his career as a gynecologist and obstetrician, Chervenak was recently elected by the National Academies to the Institute of Medicine, one of the highest honors a physician can achieve.
