You're behind the wheel trying to avoid traffic so you're not late for a meeting. If only there was less traffic. Well, João Barros, through vehicular networking, is helping create intelligent transportation systems. He is investigating having moving vehicles scanned from different sensors in order to detect locations and quantity. The result could lead to plans that lessen bottlenecks. Barros, national director of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program, recently received the IEEE Communications Society's Young Researcher Award for the Europe, Middle East, and Africa Region.
