Andrew Carnegie once stated, “Only in popular education can man erect the structure of an enduring civilization.”

Perhaps this is the reason he contributed the funds that established Carnegie Mellon more than 100 years ago.

To celebrate his landmark gift, along with the gifts of nearly 100 other individuals, families, corporations and foundations that have each contributed $1 million or more to the university, Carnegie Mellon recently inaugurated a very special philanthropic society —The Highlands Circle.

Together, Highlands Circle members have given almost $778 million to the university, an incredible symbol of their dedication and faith in Carnegie Mellon’s ability to change people’s lives through teaching and research.

Their contributions play a leading role in the university’s position at the intersection of art, technology, business, policy and the humanities. As a result, Carnegie Mellon is transforming what was once unimaginable into something that is, instead, unparalleled.

This new society was launched during the weekend of September 17-18 in a celebration that brought together the talents of many faculty and students, as well as alumni.

Throughout the weekend, the university hosted several gatherings for Highlands Circle members to demonstrate the impact of their gifts, further strengthen their ties with the university and celebrate these individuals for their generous commitment to Carnegie Mellon.
