Anyone who’s lived near the ocean knows all too well what happens when salt water comes into contact with metal. Rust. Or, in engineering parlance, corrosion. Keeping corrosion at bay is serious business, with some estimates placing the cost of corrosion control as high as four percent of the gross national product. Thanks to the efforts of Harvey Hack (S’70, E’71)—a senior advisory engineer at Northrop Grumman in Annapolis, Md.— researchers will have an additional weapon in their corrosion-control arsenal. Hack led efforts to produce a corrosion terminology standard, NACE/ASTM G193. He was recently recognized for his contribution with the ASTM International Frank W. Reinhart Award.
