By purchasing 116,000 megawatt hours of renewable energy credits from a wind turbine farm that generates electricity, Carnegie Mellon has offset 100% of its electric consumption for 2012. The amount is equivalent to avoiding the annual carbon dioxide emissions of almost 10,000 U.S. homes. The university currently ranks second on the EPA’s list of green-power purchasers among all U.S. colleges and universities.
