The U.S. Department of Energy’s “Better Buildings Case Competition” was a Who’s Who when it came to the contestants: Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, Cornell, Chicago, Dartmouth, Michigan, MIT, and Yale were among the 14 teams asked to develop solutions to cut energy waste and improve energy efficiency of real-world commercial buildings.
Undaunted by the competition, the CMU team came home with two first-place awards.

- “Best Proposal” for increasing cooling efficiency in big-box retail stores by upgrading rooftop unit technology
The winning team included Jie Yee Chan (E’13), Adrian Chong (A’13), Chao Ding (A’13), Donald Johnson (A’98, TPR’12), Alan Jenn (E’13), Mili-Ann Tamayao (E’13), and Allison Weis (E’13).
